All You Need to Know about Aadhaar Card

Aadhaar has undoubtedly become a crucial document not only to establish your identity and avail the government’s social security schemes but also for financial matters such as filing tax returns and keeping your bank account active.

There are various benefits of linking your mobile number to your Aadhaar. You can e-verify your income tax return using Aadhaar. In this process, an OTP (one-time-password)is sent to the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar. You can also update the personal details linked to your Aadhaar online by using an OTP sent to your mobile. Downloading your e-Aadhaar also requires verification via an OTP sent to your linked mobile number. There are other uses of linking your mobile number to Aadhaar.

Linking your mobile number to Aadhaar for the first time:

This needs to be done offline. Most online transactions are OTP authenticated, i.e., the OTP is sent to your registered mobile number. Obviously, online authentication is not possible as you are linking your number for the first time. To do this offline, you need to follow these steps:

  1. Visit your nearest Aadhaar center to get the Aadhaar Update/Correction Form or download it from the UIDAI website. (Click here to download the form).
  2. Fill out the form correctly; submit it to the concerned person at the center, and mention on the form that only your mobile number needs to be updated.

  1. After submitting your documents, your biometrics will be verified at the enrolment center (Enrolment Center Search)to go to the portal directly. Your thumb impression will be verified. Here, your biometrics that were recorded while applying for your Aadhaar card is verified to authenticate the changes you requested.
  2. After verifying the biometrics, you will be given an acknowledgment slip. Usually, it takes 2–5 working days for your details to be updated, but as per the UIDAI helpline, the turnaround time for the updation is 10 days.

Updating your mobile number

Updating the mobile number on your Aadhaar can be done online. However, you first need to make sure that your existing number that is linked to your Aadhaar is functional and handy. This is because the OTP to authenticate the change in details will be sent to your existing number. You will be able to link your new mobile number with Aadhaar only after submitting the OTP sent to your old number.

  1. On the UIDAI website, navigate to the Aadhaar Update tab and click the link for the Aadhaar Self-Service portal. (Click here to go to the portal directly). Enter your Aadhaar number and the Captcha text. Then, request an OTP.
  2. The OTP will be sent to your existing mobile number. After submitting it, you will be redirected to a new page where you can update your mobile number.
  3. On the Select field(s) to update drop-down, select Mobile Number.
  4. Now, enter your new mobile number and click Submit.
